Trends in the Wedding Industry in 2024 That I Love as a Wedding Videographer
As a wedding videographer, I have the privilege of capturing some of the most heartfelt and innovative moments on a couple’s special day. The wedding industry is constantly evolving, and there are a few trends for 2024 that have really stood out to me in recent years. Here are some of my favorites:
Changing Up Tradition
Weddings are all about tradition, but there’s something incredibly special about couples who put their own unique spin on those traditions. Two trends that I’ve absolutely loved filming are the unity shot and the bottle of bourbon ceremony. I’ve had multiple couples incorporate a shot of liquor sharing during their ceremony in late 2023 and expect to see this trend emerge throughout 2024 and beyond in the wedding industry.
For instance, Xavier and Laura dug up a bottle of bourbon in the middle of their ceremony. It was a beautiful and symbolic moment, representing not just the commitment they were making to each other, but also the journey they had been on together.
Similarly, Sarah and Lachie did a unity shot during their ceremony. It was a fun and personal touch that showcased their personalities and brought a smile to everyone’s face. These small, unique moments make the ceremony feel truly personal and memorable.
Private Vow Exchange
Another trend that has gained popularity is the private vow exchange. Some couples choose to share their vows in an intimate setting before the official ceremony. I filmed a beautiful private vow exchange for Anika Nica at the gardens at UBC. The couple chose to have a traditional ceremony later in the day at the UBC Rose Garden, but this private moment allowed them to express their deepest feelings without the pressure of an audience. It’s a touching way to start the day and adds an extra layer of emotion to the wedding film.
First Look
I will always advocate for a first look. The first look is when the couple sees each other for the first time before the ceremony. The benefits are numerous: you get to spend more time with your special person earlier in the day, it provides a private and authentic way to share your emotions, and it allows you to get a lot of photos done before the ceremony. This means you have more time to spend with your guests and family after the ceremony. It’s one of the most authentic parts of the wedding day and never fails to bring out genuine, heartfelt reactions.
Non-Traditional Wedding Parties
Gone are the days when every wedding had to have a strict lineup of bridesmaids and groomsmen. Many couples are opting to forgo traditional wedding parties altogether, or they are having their friends and family sit down during the ceremony. This shift puts the focus squarely on the couple, which is, after all, what the day is truly about. It creates a more relaxed atmosphere and allows the couple to spend more time with all their guests.
No Big Extravagant Cake
Finally, I’ve noticed a trend towards smaller, more personal wedding cakes. Some couples choose to have a small cake for the photo opportunity and then serve other desserts to their guests. This not only cuts down on costs but also allows couples to offer a variety of treats that their guests might enjoy more. It’s a practical and sweet way to add a personal touch to the dessert table.
What will we see change in the industry?
These trends reflect a move towards more personalized, intimate, and meaningful wedding celebrations. As a wedding videographer, I love capturing these moments because they truly reflect the unique love and personalities of the couples I work with. Each wedding becomes a distinct and memorable story, and these trends add depth and emotion to the narrative. I can’t wait to see what other creative ideas couples come up with in the future!
