A vow renewal ceremony is a marriage ceremony where the couple renews their vows. This can be done to commemorate the occasion of an anniversary, or to celebrate a milestone in the relationship. Vow renewal ceremonies are special because they are not just about the couple’s commitment to each other, but they are also about recognising what is important in life and celebrating it together.
Ellen got in touch and tole me all about her plans for a surprise vow renewal in Whistler. She told me about the the significance of capturing these life memories after losing a family member a few years ago. She realised the importance of capturing memories not only for herself, but for her children to look back on. Her 10 year wedding anniversary to husband Ryan was approaching and she she reached out to me to be part of her surprise vow renewal to be held on a balcony at the Westin. I loved the idea of a vow renewal and especially as a surprise!
Ellen and Ryan have been together for 12 years, they were up visiting Whistler from Pitt Meadows, joined by their two children and dog. Ellen organised a photography session with photographer Miranda, so when we both entered their hotel room, it wasn’t completely out of the blue. While Ellen got ready, and prepped the kids, Ryan was posed on the couch for some portraits. Soon the kids came out with a gift from Ellen – a ring! “Mom wants to remarry you!” It took a while for it to finally click that the wedding was happening right there and then, and why Linda the officiant was also in the room. We soon headed out onto the balcony for an intimate family ceremony. With vows already prepared by Ellen, Ryan winged it. What was a short ceremony, the love and bond this family has was so apparent! What better way to celebrate your family than getting that on camera!
